Great River Passage Workshop pointing at the park boundary.

Great River Passage

The Great River Passage is Saint Paul’s 17-mile river corridor along the Mississippi River that includes vibrant neighborhoods, active commercial sites, important transportation corridors, and more than 20 public parks providing thousands of acres of public green space for outdoor recreation, special events, wildlife habitat, and scenic views.

SCOPE:

We lead a team of planners, landscape architects, and public artists who collaborated with the City to create an Interpretive Plan that links the stories of this dynamic place with its rich resources. The Plan identified core interpretive messages with a range of delivery methods and used extensive community engagement, through focused workshops and community-directed outreach activities, to collect stories about the special places and experiences along the Passage.

OUTCOME:

The Plan created a foundation for ensuring that key resources along the Passage, and the stories that they convey, are integrated into economic and community development activities along Saint Paul’s riverfront. This interpretive plan is the next step in implementation of the overall project Master Plan. The project was recently named as a 2015 Award Winner for Excellence in Community Engagement by the American Planning Association of Minnesota.
