Our world today often places emphasis on the written word and the need for tangible proof. As a result, oral traditions and local knowledge are often misunderstood, even undervalued. Ethnography is a process whereby oral traditions and local knowledge are brought to the forefront where their significance and value can be understood and appreciated.
Oral History
Through formalized interviews with knowledgeable individuals and elders, personal stories and histories can be documented to help explain, illuminate, and enrich the history of a given place or event. The 106 Group makes a point of working closely with community elders and different cultural groups to better understand the meaning and history of a given place.
Traditional Cultural Property Evaluations
A traditional cultural property, or TCP, is defined by the National Register of Historic Places to be the physical embodiment on the landscape of traditions, beliefs, and practices of any community, be it a Native American tribe or local ethnic group. The 106 Group has experience identifying and evaluating traditional cultural properties. Attuned to the sensitivity and, at times, controversial nature of these types of projects and cultural studies, the 106 Group has worked with several tribal leaders and developers in the past to address these kinds of issues.
Cultural Resources Program Development for Tribes
The 106 Group offers assistance and training services to tribes as they establish cultural resource programs for their ancestral lands. We work with tribal leaders, and the community as a whole, to develop suitable and sustainable programs for cultural resources management.
